Hooking a bass fish requires a good bait, just as attracting an audience on social media requires engaging content. Senior Davis Owen (@davygravyy), better known as Davey Gravy, has managed to garner over 20,000 Instagram followers by expressing his passion for fishing through creative posts.

“My Instagram follower base started as a spinoff from my high school friend’s (@ayo_fishing) YouTube channel,” Owen said. “His fans became my fans and then my followers grew from word of mouth.”

While most of Owen’s posts are about fishing, he said he also likes to talk about sports and traveling.

“I am a fourth generation Red Sox fan who had the chance to travel to Boston and watch them play in the World Series in 2004, 2013 and 2018,” he said.

Owen, who is sponsored by Googan (a bait and fishing product company), said one of his posts from this past summer went viral on YouTube.

“It started when my friend and I were filming, and I fell off the dock backwards into the water,” Owen said. “I hooked a monster of a fish, but he was caught in some weeds, so my friend jumped out of the boat to get the fish and take my picture with it. I am a muddy mess in that photo and the video gained a lot of attention online.”

He said he interacts with his followers primarily online, but there have been moments where he has had face-to-face encounters with them.

“A few years ago, I was walking around the Bass Pro Shop beside Gillette Stadium where the New England Patriots play in Foxboro, Massachusetts, and a guy recognized me,” Owen said. He couldn’t believe it was me and asked if I would take a picture with him. Anytime I meet a follower, I try to take a picture and post a shout-out to them on Instagram.”

When he is not producing online content, Owen is pursuing a major in Sports Management. He said his courses have helped him prepare for his future career.

“The hands-on experiences I get in my classes are what made me choose LC over other colleges,” Owen said. “I also enjoyed my internship this past summer because I was able to see how things we have learned in our courses relate to the real world of business.”

Dr. Clay Bolton, Associate Professor of Sports Management, said Davis is a role model for his peers and always willing to lend a helping hand.

“He is an inspiration to our students,” Dr. Bolton said. “Davis is going to be assisting me with the restart of our Bass Fishing Team this spring, with the hope of returning to competition next fall.”

After graduation, Owen said he would like to work in sports.
